The mighty Asian water buffalo (Bubalus bubalis), seen here in the mountainous region of North Vietnam. Invaluable assets to the local rural peoples, ploughing the terraced rice paddies and carting goods from place to place.
Here they take a break and cool off in the muddy waters of an empty rice field.
The water buffalo has long been a domesticated Asian bovine animal and used as livestock, for its meat and for dairy products and they have also been known to be used as pack animals to carry heavy loads.
Asia has the worlds highest population of water buffalo which stands at around 95% with half that total being in India. |
