The Kinh, officially known as Vietnamese so as to differentiate them from other ethnic groups originated in Northern Vietnam and the lower reaches of Southern China and are the majority ethnic group in Vietnam comprising 86% of the population. Other tribal groups such as Tay 1.9%, Tai 1.7%, Hoa 1.4% and Hmong 1% among others make up the remainder of the population.
The ancient Vietnamese were known as 'Lac' or Lac Viet. |
