Swayambhunath in Nepal is a buddhist stupa of immense proportions standing atop a hill over looking the city of Kathmandu.
It is known affectionately as the 'Monkey Temple' due to the abundance of Rhesus monkeys that guard the hill and receive food aplenty from visitors and worshippers alike.
Surrounding this giant stupa are all manner of ancient shrines mostly carved out of stone and containing little alcoves where sit buddhas in meditative pose. These shrines are still being worshipped to this day. And as can be seen, being draped in the buddhist mala or prayer beads. |
