Armillaria mellea known in English as the Honey mushroom (Melle meaning honey), due to the honey coloured cap is an edible fungi that grows in abundance in Japan. It is a plant pathogen and a species of Honey fungus also. It causes Armillaria root rot in many plant species. Not all those that eat it have a tolerance to it and it can cause severe stomach upsets. In Japanese it is known as the Naratake mushroom and found all over Japan sometimes called Motashi or Modashi also.
Nara means Oak in Japanese so Oak trees are often where this mushroom can be seen growing. It's a parasitic mushroom that arises from buried wood or at the base of living or dead trees during the fall or autumn. These fine specimens were discovered in the forest of Togakushi, Nagano Prefecture, Japan. |
