Fresh glossy leaves of the climbing plant Poison Ivy (Toxicodendron radicans) making its way up the trunk of a Japanese White Birch tree. This woody vine produces Urushiol, a skin irritant that can cause serious itching and a rash followed by blistering, the extent of the blistering is dependant on the tolerance to the irritant that the person who has fallen victim to has.
The rash can take weeks to disappear and some people need a course of anti-histamines to reduce the itchiness. Although it is not life threatening in any way it can look quite grotesque in worse case scenarios.
