Macro close-up of an ornamental Cactus in Bloom. Cacti (plural) are a very hardy species of plant, very distinctive and unusual. Their stem is photosynthetic and succulent and they can survive for days without any external means of obtaining water due to the stem containing such a large amount.
They have adapted to some extreme conditions and grow in hot and arid environments..
The tallest Cactus ever recorded is Pachycereus pringlei which has reached a mammoth height of 19.2m. The smallest ever recorded is Blossfeldia liliputiana which is about 1cm in diameter.
