The ancient and ruinous temple complex at Wat Phou or Vat Phu in Champasak, Southern Laos which is, unsurprisingly on the World Heritage list.
This is one of the most important religious sites in Southern Laos dating back as far as the 6th and 8th centuries. During the 9th to 13th centuries it was part of the Khmer Angkor Empire. Its location is highly agreeable, a mere 6km's from the River Mekong and at the base of the mountain Phu Kao. This mountain was once said to be the home of the Hindu God Lord Shiva and the temple was also dedicated to him but later after when the Angkorian empire thrive the original building was replaced (11th century) by what we see now and converted to a place of worship for Theravada Buddhists.
