Ryokan or 'Japanese Inn' date back to the Edo Period (1603-1868) and used to serve travellers along Japan's highways. Nowadays though they are normally located in scenic areas in the mountains or by the sea for example and add to the old worldy traditional Japanese feel for paying guests.
