Traditional Japanese lantern at Chusha Shinto Shrine in Togakushi, Nagano Prefecture, Japan.
The Japanese like the Chinese have an old tradition regarding paper lanterns. In Japan they are a common sight at sacred Shrines during certain times of the year such as festivals when they are put on display. They can be decorated with exotic colours and designs with Kanji script covering them in the artistic calligraphy format. |
