Beautiful old wooden architecture at Houkosha Shrine in Togakushi, Nagano Prefecture, Japan.
Togakushi is situated in a beautiful mountainous region of Japan within Joshinetsu National Park. Not only does the area abound in nature but is also home to five important sacred Shinto Shrines or Jinja as they are known in Japanese.
Hokosha Jinja is one of these ancient shrines. The building itself is made almost entirely with wood and if one visits and looks closely there are no modern nails holding the structure together. It is built using very old and traditional methods which in this day and age of modern industrial design add greatly to its character. The main hall is believed to date back to 1058 A.D. |
