At Shinto shrines in Japan it is common and traditional to see some form of Tori (Torii) or shrine gate at the entrance to the main precinct. The simplest way to identify a Shinto shrine is the presence of a Tori at the entrance or even inside the shrine. The use of these shrine gates goes back to around a thousand years it is thought as their useage is mentioned in text dating back to 922 A.D. |
