In Hindu religion the Cow is very holy, so holy in fact that Hindu's won't eat the meat. In most states of India cow slaughter is actually prohibited, only two states, Kerala and West Bengal allow this practice. This leaves the cows free to wander around towns and cities of India where local people feed them, they eat a lot of waste also, including 'cardboard'! and they give milk in abundance.
In India the cow is a symbol of wealth, strength and selfless giving. Its veneration goes back to ancient times.
