Market scene at Pakse, Champasak Province, Laos. Pakse or Pakxe is a city in southern Laos, Pakse meaning 'mouth of the river Se' situated at the confluence of the Mekong and Xedone rivers. It was founded by the French back in 1905 as an administrative outpost. It has now become the commercial centre of southern Laos since the bridge of the Mekong river connecting it with Ubon Ratchathani in Thailand was built.
It has a couple of good markets, a small one (but not too small) in the centre and a bigger one a couple of kilometres out of town. Both are full of hustle and bustle and one can get a genuine feel of Laotian culture here with numerous friendly characters to pass the time with and a veritable smorgasbord of produce for sale from barbecued chicken claws and innards to tropical fruits, dried fish and beautiful Laotian sarongs. |
