Dai tribal woman at Menghun market, Yunnan, China. The Dai peoples of China is the officially recognised name for a number of ethnic groups living in Xishuangbanna Dai Autonomous Prefecture. They are typically farmers and grow a number of crops including the Asian staple, rice. Many of the Dai or Tai Lue (conventional name) live by the Mekong river in South Yunnan. Menghun is a small town not too far away from Jinghong City, the capital of Xishuangbanna which is predominantly inhabited by Dai Peoples. The weekly market and the best time to visit when minority peoples such as the Akha otherwise known as the Hani come from surrounding villages is on a Sunday. |
