Happy smiling face of a Burmese girl trader wearing the cosmetic Thanaka face cream at Magwe (Magway) market in Myanmar (Burma). Magwe is an interesting little town in Magwe Division where one can find a small but fascinating daily market with friendly and hospitable people like this girl in the image.
The Bamar or Burmese also known as Burman are the dominant ethnic group of Burma and constitute 68% or 30 million of the population. The Bamar are of East Asian descent and speak a Sino-Tibetan language related to Tibetan. In general they have straight black hair and a fair complexion unlike the more gritty minority ethnic groups such as the Karen, Shan, Pa-O, Mon and Kachin.
The Bamar traditionally wear sarongs known in Burmese as Longyi much like the Indian term Longhi and the womens sarong is known as a 'htamain' although in major towns and cities western dress has become popular. |
