Miao lady at Laomeng ethnic minority market, Yunnan, China. Laomeng market occurs once a week when indigenous peoples from the mountainous villages nearby congregate to socialise and trade. It's an exciting and colourful event with the majority of peoples there being the flambouyant Miao but one can also see many Yao along with Yi and Hani tribes people.
Sub-groups of Miao ethnicity are H'mong or Hmong in countries such as Vietnam and Laos. In fact the dress sense of the Miao is quite reminiscent of the Flower H'mong in Vietnam who also wear very vivid and quite distinctive colours of their tribal group, and decorate their costume similarly with ornate and intricate embroidered patterns.
The Miao are one of the 56 ethnic groups officially recognised by the 'Peoples Republic of China' and the number in China according to the 2000 census was nearly 10 million with a tenth of those or almost 1 million Miao being located in Yunnan Province. |
